News: Ludacris Gets Political and Gets Denounced, Jay-z Dismisses Timbaland Album Rumor

Ludacris drops "Politics (Obama is Here)"

Earlier this week, Ludacris dropped his highly-anticipated Gangsta Grillz Mixtape titled "The Preview" (check The Stash to get your copy). On there is a freestyle over Young Buck's "Get Buck" titled "Politics"; an ode to presidential candidate Barack Obama. Luda (who as announced as a Barack supporter in 2006) shows support for Barack and his campaign, but apparently, not all support is good support. Politicians feel Ludacris' lyrics about Hilary Clinton, Jesse Jackson, Sen. McCain, and Bush were offensive. Here's some lines he drops:

"Said I handled his biz and I'm one of his favorite rappers
Well give Luda a special pardon if I'm ever in the slammer
Better yet put him in office, make me your vice president
Hillary hated on you, so that b**ch is irrelevant
Jesse talking slick and apologizing for what?
if you said it then you meant it how you want it have a gut!
and all you other politicians trying to hate on my man,
watch us win a majority vote in every state on my man
you can't stop what's bout to happen, we bout to make history
the first black president is destined and it's meant to be
the threats ain't fazing us, the nooses or the jokes
so get off your ass, black people, it's time to get out and vote!
paint the White House black and I'm sure that's got 'em terrified
McCain don't belong in ANY chair unless he's paralyzed
Yeah I said it cause Bush is mentally handicapped
Ball up all of his speeches and I throw em like candy wrap
cause what you talking I hear nothing even relevant
and you the worst of all 43 presidents
get out and vote or the end will be near
the world is ready for change because Obama is here!"

The Obama support from hip hop is great, but I can see why this would give off the wrong impression. I can definitely see oppressors using this against Barack. Barack Obama's camp has denounced this song and said Ludacris should be ashamed of these lyrics. I find it funny that politicians are listenin to Gangsta Grillz mixtapes.

Jay-z Denies Rumor of a Fully-Produced Timbaland Album

Recently Timbaland spoke about thoroughly producing an album for Jay-z with an "international" sound and how he's even using bagpipes in the production. The rumor generated some hype since Jay and Timbo showed some good chemistry with tracks like "Big Pimpin", "The Bounce" and "Dirt Off Your Shoulders". Jay denied the rumors about the project saying "You know I love Timbaland, he is like a brother to me, but until the music is done it’s premature," Jay told Rolling Stone. "I’m a person that works off music." Jay-z also talked about how he decides how production will be handled based off who brings the best music. He stated "If Timbaland makes 10 great tracks then he produces the album,". "If Kanye West makes 10 great tracks then he produces the album; if he makes three, I’ll take three. I let the music dictate the direction."
I was a little skeptical on the project myself. Three to four tracks per album is always good, but I don't know if those two possess the same chemistry that JT and Missy share with Timbaland to make a fully hot album. The two are masters at what they do, but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll work.

Girls, Girls, Girls: Chick of the Week - 7/28: Cassie

The chick of the week goes to Cassie. Last week rumors spread about her engagement to Diddy, but supposedly they're false. Aside from the rumors, my main reason for choosing her is because she's hot. I came across a blog site recently and people were gettin on her for havin no ass, but Cassie's got a fine face and a nice set of lips to make up for it. Not to mention her sexy petite body. I'd definitely wife her.

NextUp: Asher Roth

For years image has always been important with rap artists. Whether they have a hood image like Jeezy or Wayne, a "backpacker" image like Kweli or Mos Def, or they're just themselves like Andre 3000 or Kanye; it tends to define their music and audience they attract. Then there's Asher Roth who possess the complete opposite image of the typical rapper.

Click the full story to continue reading, peep vids, and download Asher Roth's Gangster Grillz Mixtape!

Asher's a blonde-haired, suburban white boy from PA with a collegiate image. While some ignorant-minded rap fans may not give him a chance due to his image, this dude can spit. I've been bumping his Gangsta Grillz mixtape for a minute now and he's nice. He does sound a bit like Eminem, but his delivery and flow is different. Whether he's rapping about sex in the morning, cartoon chicks, girls rubbing their titties, or just spittin'; this dude keeps your interest with humor and a clear delivery. Check his Rap City freestyle:

Also check his myspace to hear his freestyle over "A Millie" (yes, another A Millie freestyle) and peep his Gangsta Grillz mixtape: The Greenhouse Effect (check the link below). CNN's Black In America

I'm glad I was able to find the full video @ World Star HipHop (major props for that). So I'm uppin' it here in case you missed it.
On Wednesday and Thursday, CNN aired a special documentary titled "Black In America". The 4 hour documentary examines the lives of African American's and shows the struggles we experience with family, the school system, getting good jobs, and our portrayal in the media. I recommend that all my people check it out and read my thoughts at the bottom.

Day 1: The Black Woman & Family pt. 1

pt. 2

Day 2: The Black Man

My interpretation: I feel the documentary covered various issues that many of us are aware of, and it also spread awareness to those who are uninformed about some of the struggles we face. Black In America started in the perfect order by covering the black family and woman. Hence the family is your foundation to many things in life, that's where issues are created. For example, growing up without a Father may lead to problems when developing a boy to a man and a girl to a woman. For young boys, we need a Father to introduce us to how to provide for your family, treat a woman, and possess strength and masculinity. Without a Father, it may result for young men to seek acceptance from older male family members and friends, develop certain thoughts and ideas about women, lack guidance, and become easily influenced by other guys.
For women, growing up without a father, it may result to them falling for older guys with bad intent, developing a negative view on males, and failure to understand men in general. As much as boys and girls need a father in their life, we need a Mother to ensure parental equilibrium. The moral of this story is to mold a child to an adult successfully, it starts from the home and family.
The second part of BiA covers what black males evolve into which is a black man. As we go through life, we face problems obtaining a good education which leads to the challenge of getting a decent job. In poverty stricken communities, many students are not focused on education because they develop an impatience and are eager to escape their harsh life of low income. Some teachers figure since the students have a careless attitude, why should they care? Black in America also mentioned the high dropout rate amongst African Americans, but it's up to us to stick it through and complete our curriculum to prepare us for the future and grant us with education. Though they may provide us with outdated books and insufficient information, we have resources such as the internet and libraries to help educate ourselves.
Black in America also touched on how successful black Americans are criticized by their peers and are labeled a sellout if they work in corporate America. It's blasphemous for blacks to receive any type of criticism due to their success. Labeling someone a sell-out/Uncle Tom because of success is not only a slap in the face for the person being insulted but to the black race in general. Corporate success is an honor and it provides hope to our peers. Take it from somebody who works in it now.
In conclusion, Black in America provided statistics about dropout rates, employment, and many other negative stats. It's up to use to stay on the positive side of the those statistics. There's hope out there for all minorities but it won't come easy. Hard work and patience is the key to success and I feel no one is born to fail. While we are in the middle of making progress we have to tune out the materialism and ignore our image in the media. Instead of being brainwashed into thinking you need chains, rims, and cars for acceptance; just view that as your goal for things you will accomplish once you're established. It may be hard being black in America, but that doesn't mean living a successful life is impossible.

Quick News: Diddy Engaged, Nas vs. Bill O'Reilly, and More!

Cassie and Diddy Rumored to be Engaged

I'm not a hater, but I'm hatin! I'm jokin but I give props to Puff for takin one of the baddest chicks off the market. Though they've been engaged since early June, it was supposed to be on the low, but in the entertainment industry, there's no such thing as a secret. There's no set date for the marriage between the two.

Bill O'Reilly Gets At Nas

On July 23rd, Nas participated in a boycott started by ColorofChange.org and MoveOn.org protesting Fox News and Bill O'Reilly. Prior to that, Nas also released a song on his album titled "Sly Fox" expressing his thoughts on Fox and Bill's blatant racist remarks that are targeted towards African Americans and Barack Obama. Apparently Bill O'Reilly is aware of Nas' actions and had some words to say. Check the video below...

Sounds like Mr. O'Reilly is salty about Nas speaking up. Instead of ignoring Nas like he says people should do, he shows his unprofessionalism with a short segment of him taunting Nas and attempting to embarass him announcing "low" first week album sales. He makes it seem as if Nas' aim were to sale as many records as possible, but he is just aiming to get his message out.

Seeing is Believing 7/23: New Gnarls Barkley, DJ Khaled feat. Rick Ross & others, and Plies Videos

Gnarls Barkley - Who's Gonna Save My Soul
This video is from left field, but I'm feelin' it. The heart scene reminds me of that famous scene from Alien/Spaceballs. Check out the J's on the heart. If you've been sleepin' on The Odd Couple album, you definitely need to check it out. Its one of the better and innovative albums that dropped this year.

Dj Khaled feat. Rick Ross, Plies, Trick Daddy, Boosie, and Ace Hood

This track is decent. But seriously, did we need another one of these Khaled and friends joints? As if "We Takin Over", "Im So Hood", "100 Million Dollars" and others weren't enough. What happened to Lil' Wayne's verse? We Global will be in stores Sept. 16th.

News: Detox Dropping in the Fall?

I was a lil skeptical about posting this since Detox is slowly turning into a hip hop myth. Dr. Dre sat down with USA Today to discuss his final project and how he plans to release it in the Fall of this year (November or December to be exact). The project is said to feature the "usuals" (I'm assuming Snoop, Em, and 50), Lil' Wayne (who is rumored to ghostwrite for Dre on Detox), Jay-z, and Nas.

Detox has been in discussion since Eminem's Encore which was released in 2004. On the song titled "Encore" which features Dr. Dre and 50 Cent, Eminem says "Don't worry about Detox, its comin'". Shortly after in 2005, on The Game's "Higher", Dr. Dre says himself "look out for Detox!". Seeing that The Chronic came out in '92, Chronic 2001 came out in '99, we're due for a new Dre project. The westcoast needs this right about now.

News: Nas Debuts at #1 & Supports a Movement!

Nas' latest LP debuts at #1 on the charts moving 180,947 units. That's pretty damn good considering the commotion he went thru trying to get the title accepted and the late promotion. Call Untitled/Nigger a gimmick if you want, Nas just had to get some shit off his chest.

Nas - Sly Fox

In other Nas news, life imitates art with the boycott of Fox news. If you've been under a rock, Nas has a song titled "Sly Fox" addressing the blatant racism and from Fox News and Bill O'Reilly (please check the video above). Nas has joined the boycott of Fox News that was started by ColorofChange.org and MoveOn.org. The petition has over 600,000 signatures and the boycott will take place tomorrow at 2pm at Fox's headquarters in Manhattan, New York.

I'm liking this movement right here. I feel if something obviously isn't right, we as a people definitely have to bring it to attention. If we don't say a word this ignorance will continue. Joking about Obama's assassination, calling his wife "Obama's baby mama", and debating a lynching party for Michelle Obama; is it me or should prejudice statements like that not even be allowed on the air? Good luck with this one.

Album Review: Nas - Untitled

Disclaimer: This is my first ever album review. Don't consider this a warning, consider it an accomplisment.

Nas - Untitled

4.5/5

It’s been 14 years since Queens Bridge MC Nas debuted with the classic album, Illmatic. Since 94', Nas has been one of hip hop's most original and prolific artists touching various subjects and kicking pure knowledge. Esco is back with his follow up to his last album Hip Hop Is Dead. While the title caused a raucous in the hip hop community and exposed the insecurity of artists' music (unintentionally), Nas came with an even more controversial title, Nigger. Once the title was released to the public, controversy emerged in no time. Fellow music artists like Jay-z, Akon, and Alicia Keys supported the album titles message, but others like the NAACP opposed it. Eventually, the album title had to be changed in order to be released. Fans (including myself) were displeased with the album’s title removal, but we all know what the original title is. On the albums lead single “Hero”, Nas raps “So untitled it is, I never change nothin’/ But people remember this/If Nas can't say it, think about these talented kids/With new ideas being told what they can and can't spit”

The album starts off with Nas going in over a sampled piano instrumental produced by newcomer rapper and producer Jay Electronica. The laid-back instrumental and abrasive delivery set the tone of the album. Nas even takes shots at 50 Cent when he drops lines like “Take 27 emcee's put them in a line and they're out of alignment/my assignment since he said retirement
hiding behind 8 Mile and The Chronic/Gets rich but dies rhyming/...Now add 23 more from Queens to B-more/I'm over their heads, like a bulimic on a seesaw/Now that's 50 porch monkeys ate up at the same time”

At a time where mainstream hip hop mainly consists of rapping about materialism, sex, and drug trafficking; Nas took a completely different direction with his latest effort. Nas collaborated with R&B singer Chris Brown and The Game on “Make the World Go Round” which has the most mainstream appeal out of all the songs on the album. The rest of the albums content is discussing black stereotypes (N.I.G.G.E.R., Yall My Niggas), historical racism (You Can’t Stop Us Now), and politics (America, Black President). One of the standout tracks, “Sly Fox”, Nas exposes Fox and CBS’ propaganda and the lack of support for the hip hop community. Nas also has words for hip hop's biggest supporter Bill O’Reilly (sarcasms) for attempting to remove Nas from a free concert for Virginia Tech. Another standout track on the album is “Fried Chicken” featuring Busta Rhymes. Nas and Busta rap over a smooth instrumental produced by UK producer Mark Ronson, about Fried Chicken.

The album ends with “Black President”, an ode to the presidential candidate Barack Obama. Nas discusses the possibilities and outcome of Barack’s potential victory this November. It features a sample from 2pac’s “I wonder if Heaven’s Got Ghetto” that states “and though it seems heaven-sent, we ain’t ready to have a black President”

In conclusion, this album is a superb effort by Nas. He’s definitely proved that he is at the status where he doesn’t have to strive for mainstream appeal, and he can make music from his point of view, projecting his opinion about society. Hip Hop needs albums like this at this day and age.

To sum it up in one word: Powerful.

Officer Ross?

Despite constant denials from rapper Rick Ross, details have emerged proving the entertainer worked as a corrections officer in the mid-90s.

According to TheSmokingGun.com, Department of Corrections records have been released showing the rapper (born William Leonard Roberts) worked as a prison guard for 18 months beginning in December 1995. Provided by DoC spokesperson Jo Ellyn Rackleff, Ross’ personal information including his Social Security number was verified and proved his employment.
Further details show he graduated from the DoC training academy where he was later assigned to the South Florida Reception Center in Dade County before leaving in June 1997. The facility is allegedly one of the three statewide locations which intakes new prisoners. He reportedly was earning a salary of $25,794.34 upon his departure.

When previously asked in a YouTube video if he had ever worked in a prison after being called out by fellow Miami rapper Trick Daddy, Ross responded “No, that’s not true.”
Ross was unavailable for comment at press time.

Taken from SOHH.com
---------------------------------------------

There's nothing wrong with having a legal past prior to the rap game. Is this what rap has come to? Are rappers going to have to create a fallacy in order for the audience to pay attention to them? I don't see how these joints can be Photoshop'd, looks authentic to me.

Do you think this is the end of Ross' career? I think not! Rap fans these days are pretty forgiving. Exposure has always been a factor to hip hop. Whether its studio gangstas or rappers on the d/l, fans tend to get over it and keep it moving. Drop a couple of lines...

GameFly: Top 5 Games To Check For

If you up on games like myself, then you've had to have checked out the E3 coverage. Here's my top 5 joints to be amped about:

1. Resident Evil 5

With controversy already stirring up due to the games location being set in Africa, Capcom is back with Resident Evil 5. Resident Evil 5 picks up where its predecessor Resident Evil 4 left off, with the invasion of parasites corrupting human beings. When have you known the Resident Evil series to disappoint? Resident Evil 5 is slated to drop Mar. 13th '09 for PS3 and Xbox 360.

2. Gears of War 2

In 2006, Microsoft surprised gamers with it's breakthrough hit Gears Of War. With an interesting storyline and a graphically detailed environnment, Gears Of War made a name for itself. NextGen systems have had numerous shooters, but Gears of War definitely stood out. What put GoW in a league of its own, was the online gameplay. This time around, the online gameplay will allow up to ten players to play simultaneously. Gears of War 2 will be available on Xbox 360 consoles Nov. 7th.

3. Street Fighter 4

Damn near the best fighting franchise is back for its fourth addition to the series. Recurring favorites (Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Vega, etc.) and some new fighters, will appear in this game. With unique 2.5D-animated graphics, online capability, super and ultra moves, Street Fighter 4 looks like dope ass game. SF4 will hit Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles later this year.

4. Final Fantasy XIII

The epic rpg series returns with Final Fantasy 13. If this is anything like FF7 or FF8, then this will be worth it. Peep the vid.

5. Mortal Kombat vs. DC

Honestly, I wasn't feelin this concept when I first heard it. After the viewing the game footage, it changed my mind. Of course its no Marvel vs. Capcom, MK vs. DC looks like its worth checking out. In MK vs. DC, you will see your favorite MK characters (Sub Zero, Scorpion, Johnny Cage) take on DC comic characters (Batman, Superman, Flash). In the past Mortal Kombat branded itself as a gory fighting game, while DC characters are the opposite. The game will feature blood, but it will be to a minimum and fatalities will still be available to finish your foe off. MK vs. DC drops Nov. 18th on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Honorable Mentions: Fable 2, NBA Live 09, Resistance 2, and Mega Man 9.
